Description

The Department of Community Services, Operations Division requires Seasonal Maintenance Operators for a five month work term.

 

Work Schedule

Must be able to work 40 hours per week on days, afternoon or midnight shifts, including some overtime hours.

 

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist with a variety of road maintenance activities including but not limited to: culvert installation, ditching, pothole repair, dead animal removal, debris pick up, gravel shoulder work, etc.
  • Clean and clear culverts, drainage ditches and other drainage structures
  • Cut, rake and dispose of brush and debris using a variety of hand and power tools including weed eaters, chain saws and chippers
  • Winter Control duties including but not limited to: plowing, sanding/salting, anti-icing, winter patrolling
  • Operate assigned vehicles and equipment including but not limited to tractors, pickup trucks, tandem trucks, commercial mowers, small grass cutting/hedge trimming machinery, power tools and radio communications
  • Perform concrete and asphalt pavement installation, repair, patching and cleaning using a jackhammer and other hand and power tools as necessary
  • Perform manual labor tasks on projects including installation of concrete catch basins, retaining walls, walkways and other structures as directed; builds concrete forms and places reinforcing steel as required; mixes and pours concrete as necessary
  • Perform traffic control duties for road crews on site in adherence with Book 7 of the OTM
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and cleaning of assigned equipment and tools
  • Submits neat and complete written and electronic records including time sheets, maintenance history report forms and other records as directed
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 23 kgs with an occasional requirement to lift up to 45 kgs
  • Comply with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health & Safety Act
  • Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with Department objectives

 

Education and Experience

  • Secondary School (Grade-12) Diploma required and/or any equivalent combination of training and or experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in road or landscape construction.
  • A valid Class DZ License (or higher) is required, with preference given to applicants possessing winter maintenance experience.
  • Current Standard First Aid/CPR Certificate and WHMIS training are considered an asset.
  • Applicants must also be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and have mechanical aptitude.
  • Qualified to operate vehicles including but not limited to: tandems, tractors, pickup trucks and other light equipment.
  • Heavy equipment experience is an asset.
  • Ensures that proper safety procedures are followed at all times.
    • Ability to work outside in inclement weather.
    • The successful candidates must have a clean driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving habits. A recent driver abstract within 30 days will be required. Persons with 4 or more demerit points need not apply.

 

Hourly Rate: $27.63
