Position Summary:

The Community Services Department is currently accepting applications for the part-time position of Sports Instructor. Reporting to the Coordinator, Recreation, this part-time position is responsible for the planning and delivery of instructional sports programs that are safe, fun and appropriate for the targeted age group. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program implementation with a focus on quality customer experiences
  • Foster a welcoming, respectful and safe environment for all participants
  • Develop and modify lesson plans to meet the needs of the program level
  • Set-up and take down of equipment in adherence with lesson plans
  • Understand and ensure compliance of all established rules and guidelines governing the safety and conduct of participants
  • Provide guidance and oversight of volunteers
  • Establish positive relationships and clear communication channels with all staff and participants
  • Maintain a safe and clean facility, including proper usage and storage of equipment.  Communicate any deficiencies with Supervisor
  • Evaluate situations for potential risks and proactively take action to address such risks.  Communicate any action and/or concerns to Supervisor
  • Maintain communication with the Customer Service Desk to provide relevant program updates and to request support in the event of an emergency
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and handle sensitive situations with mature judgement
  • Provide suggestions to Supervisor, Recreation on ways to enhance the program and the customer experience
  • Comply with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Administrative tasks:
  • Maintain and submit attendance records
  • Report any incidents, concerns or site damage to Supervisor
  • Submit required forms (including payroll)
  • Attend and participate in mandatory staff functions
  • Perform other duties in accordance with department objectives

 

Qualifications:

  • Attending or completion of post-secondary education in Recreation & Leisure or a related field is an asset
  • Knowledge and experience playing sport and/or teaching physical education
  • Standard First Aid & CPR C
  • HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development (or willing to obtain)
  • Minimum of  2 years of experience coaching and/or teaching program instruction to children, youth or adults is preferred
  • Experience playing (at an organized level) or officiating: basketball, soccer, volleyball, floor hockey, cricket or a racquet sport is preferred
  • Previous supervision of program participants (children, youth or adults) in a recreational environment is preferred
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities an asset is preferred
  • HIGH FIVE® Quest 2 preferred
  • HIGH FIVE® Sport preferred
  • National Coaching Certification Program preferred
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening is required
