Position Summary

The Town of Milton’s Corporate Services Department, I.T. division, is currently accepting applications for a full-time contract GIS Technician. Reporting to the Manager, Enterprise Business Systems & GIS, this position is responsible for providing GIS operational support and spatial analysis for the Town of Milton. By employing GIS best practices and spatial data creation standards, the GIS Technician will prepare maps, conduct spatial analysis, prepare web based GIS applications, convert CAD data into GIS and work in partnership with various departments to support ongoing initiatives. In addition, the successful candidate will update the Town’s corporate GIS data, provide GIS expertise to Town staff as required, and participate in ongoing GIS projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect, analyze, update and maintain the Town’s corporate GIS data, specifically road network, address points and subdivisions
  • Georeference and simplify detailed CAD drawings and plans for integration into the corporate GIS database
  • Complete specialized map requests from internal departments and external customers utilizing the Town’s corporate geodatabase and adhering to cartographic best practices
  • Prepare maps for the Town’s Planning and Building department specifically related to Staff reports, Official Plan and Zoning by-law amendments
  • Prepare data license agreements and data packages for external consultants
  • Review and conduct spatial quality control and assurance checks on data provided from external partners and consultants before integrating into the Town’s corporate GIS database
  • Provide support to the Town’s GIS users for both desktop and web-based GIS systems
  • Liaise with Town departments for the creation of ArcGIS Online story maps and supporting GIS products
  • Prepare and conduct training of the Town’s corporate GIS for end users
  • Prepare and create technical documentation for standard operating procedures and GIS business processes
  • Work in partnership with various Town departments to assist in data creation projects and spatial analysis
  • Perform and provide assistance with field data collection in support of Town initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned in accordance with department objectives

Qualifications 

  • A post-secondary diploma/degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geomatics, Planning or Environmental Studies
  • Specialized GIS software training course certificates is considered an asset
  • A minimum of 2 years of practical GIS experience preferably in a municipal environment
  • Strong familiarity and proven experience with ESRI’s ArcGIS software products and associated extensions including Network Analyst and Spatial Analyst
  • Experience working with ArcGIS Online and familiarity with web based GIS tools like Onpoint is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of current GIS industry standards, new technology and GIS best practices
  • Technical experience with data management including the ability to georeference CAD plans, edit vector data sets and review attribute details with clarity and efficiency is required
  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar CAD product is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) principles and data integrity standards is required
  • Practical knowledge of GPS/AVL and experience working with geospatial databases is considered an asset
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical individuals is essential in identifying GIS deliverables
  • Applicants should possess analytical, organizational and problem solving skills in order to plan own work, review data, identify deficiencies and solve problems

Salary Range: $65,946 - $82,433
